Bioplastics

A Market Opportunity

Bioplastics are significantly more expensive to produce than plastic derived from petroleum sources. USU researchers in the Synthetic Bio-manufacturing Center are scaling up bioplastic production to be cost-competitive with traditional plastic manufacturing.

Bioplastics are biodegradable and can be used in the manufacture of:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Cosmetic containers
  • Paper coatings
  • Medical devices

Someday soon, thanks to USU researchers, you may drink your cola from a bottle created from plastic secreted by single cell organisms.
